Day 40 – Sweet Smile
My sweet great-niece, Kaela loves to smile for the camera.
This is another shot from the birthday party that I just had to share.

Day 39 – Mustang at the Water
Reaching back a few days for this shot . . .
On my most recent visit to the “duck” pond. I just could not resist taking at least one shot of my Mustang. I am always a sucker for a good reflection on water.

Day 38 – Graffiti on a Train
This was one of those moments where I wasn’t completely prepared to take a picture. I was stopped at a railroad crossing, one of the few in our area without any crossing gates. By the time I reached into the backseat, grabbed my camera out of my bag and got ready to shoot, the train had nearly passed by. I caught this shot of the last train car from the driver’s seat of my car, note the top of my steering wheel in the frame.
At least the train didn’t completely get away. Maybe I will catch a better shot of a train in the future.
The graffiti on the train car is interesting but I can’t really tell what it says. If you recognize the artwork or symbols, feel free to share information in a comment.

Day 37 – Hey, Can I Borrow Some of this Hair?
Here’s another shot from Xander’s birthday party. Whenever Xander gets together with his cousin Kaela, he seems fascinated with her hair. I have caught similar images at other family events. He just reaches up to touch her hair, never pulling. It makes you wonder what he is thinking.

Day 36 – One Year Old Rebel
Spent the afternoon with the family celebrating my great-nephew’s first birthday. Xander kept us all entertained with his toys. Here as he stands in his wagon and rocks like it is a scooter, he shows us that at just one year old, he’s a bit of a rebel. Maybe next year’s gift should be a helmet or knee/elbow pads for this little daredevil.
Happy Birthday Xander!

Day 35 – Ducks…Ready for Take-Off
Have you ever had that moment where you know something dramatic is about to happen and you are snapping photos then… Uh oh, disk full!
That is exactly what happened here. I was watching these two ducks <snap>. The male calls the female to the waters edge. <snap>, <snap>. Then I can tell they are just about to take flight and ready.. <snap> Wait no, my memory card is full….
Well there they go!
Notes to self . .
- Be more prepared!
- Be aware of how many shots are left on the memory card!

Day 34 – Duck in the Water
I found a couple of ducks hanging out at the neighborhood pond. They were a bit nervous about my presence at first and fled to the far side of the pond. Eventually I convinced the ducks that I was harmless and I caught this shot of a late afternoon swim. I think she was still keeping an eye on me.

Here’s one more shot of the Wolfpack Turf monument. I thought the detail of this wolf was amazing. Just as I was about to snap the photo, this bird came to rest right on the point of the wolf’s ear. Nice little addition to the photo I guess.

Day 27 – Wolfpack Turf
This awesome monument stands at the entrance of the Murphy Center at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh, NC. There are six bronze wolves representing six characteristics of a wolf and of a Wolfpack football player: Confidence, Spirit, Passion, Courage, Pride and Strength.
While it was not running today, this monument features a waterfall fountain as well as audio effects. I will visit again during football season, perhaps even game day, to catch an image including the waterfall.

Day 26 – Winter Bloom
So far the winter of 2012 has been more the winter that wasn’t. Here we are in late January and we continue to have very mild days and merely cool nights. Don’t get me wrong, the weather has been beautiful but I really would like a little snow.
The spring colors are beginning to pop up in the yard. This blooming tree has been fooled into an early bloom.

Day 24 – A Light Snack
There are several squirrels that frequent my yard. There is always competition for the seed in the bird feeders. The “squirrel-proof” feeder often has a squirrel hanging from the edge reaching in for that forbidden snack. Sometimes you just have to give in and make it a little easier on them, today I tossed a couple of pieces of stale bread out in the yard and this squirrel enjoyed a nice afternoon treat.

Day 23 – Listening to the Echos
Late Sunday afternoon, I found my young friend Lane and his mom standing in their front yard. It was a cool and damp day and there were not a lot of people out and about in the neighborhood. Lane had discovered echos in the stillness. He would call out and listen for the response. It is so much fun to watch these new discoveries!

Day 18 – Evening Meal for the Birds
As afternoon turns to evening, the birds of our neighborhood stop by to get one more snack from the bird feeder. Most of the birds saw me with the camera and quickly flew away. This little guy must have either thought I looked harmless enough or was just so hungry that he decided to take his chances.

Day 16 – Welcome!
This cute little guy stands at the corner of my front walkway, shining a welcoming light for visitors. It was a cloudy day and his solar powered light is awfully dim. I suppose any visitors that may happen by this evening, will have to navigate past all those leaves on their own. I clearly need to rake again!

Here’s a second photo from my visit with family in Oxford, NC this weekend. I love to walk out among the horses on the farm. This is my favorite horse pic of the day….
Blaze paused from his evening grazing, to pose for my camera. Note the grass in his mouth.

Day 14 – Up a Tree
Sometimes you just have to climb a tree. . . Well, at least that was the case for these two girls on this chilly Saturday afternoon. This is how my younger cousins chose to entertain themselves during a family gathering in Oxford, NC, to celebrate my aunt’s birthday. Both managed to climb back down unharmed. . . there was a minor bit of damage to a pair of jeans though.

Day 13 – Three Ducks on a Stick
My photo subject search took me back out to the neighborhood lake today. From my first vantage point, I thought I was out of luck, I could see a few seagulls floating out in the middle of the lake. Yes, I said seagulls. The only problem was, they were so far away, there really was not much to see.
I went to the other end of the lake and found these three ducks hanging out on a stick at the edge of the water. They got a little nervous when I started taking pictures. I took one step too far and they hopped in the water and swam away.

Day 12 – More Pansies
I set out today with a plan to take pictures of some of the birds that frequent my yard just before sunset each evening. Of course not one bird cooperated with me. The cardinals saw me and flew away before I could snap a photo, the robins that had been coming the last few days were no where to be found. The one or two birds I was able to capture were so far off in the distance they just did really make the photo worthwhile.
So here we are with another picture of flowers. These pansies are in a box hanging on my deck, at least they could not fly away!

Day 11 – Rainy Day in Durham
Today I decided to give creating a panoramic image a try. It was raining again and I do prefer to stay relatively dry so I found a good vantage point in a parking deck. I was able to capture several recognizable Durham landmarks. A couple of my favorite “Durham places” are there on the left, DPAC and the Durham Bulls Athletic Park behind it a bit in the distance.
